All squadrons were commissioned
at Cherry Point, N.C., between March and Oct., 1943. VMB413 was the
first of eight operating squadrons to receive a commission, on March
1, 1943. MAG 61 Headquarters & Service Squadron was commissioned
on July 13, 1943, with the assigned functions of administering, servicing
and maintaining the previously commissioned 413 as well as all future
squadrons.
The remaining “400”
squadrons ( VMB 423, 433, 443 ) received commissions on Sept. 15.
The “600” squadrons ( VMB 611, 612, 613, 614 ) followed
on Oct. 1.
